The borough was created following the 2002 municipal reorganization of Montreal.

After the municipal reorganization, the arms were re-granted, but the meaning has slightly changed.

From 1927 to 1929 there was a municipal reorganization, but Velbert failed to become a county-level city.

This led to a municipal reorganization and the formation of Leidschendam, in 1938.

This was the last city to be merged into Montreal until the 2002 municipal reorganization.
