The town is slated to receive municipality status (2012).

It gained the municipality status in 2006 and its population amounts of 1,120.

The town remained the capital of Busoga region, and in 1956, it was granted municipality status.

The town was founded in 1800, being a fishing community at that time, and achieved municipality status in 1931.

Previously considered a suburb, it received municipality status in the middle of the 19th century.
