The new Explorer is, in almost every way, an upgrade from its troubled predecessors.
That followed five recalls of the Escape sport utility in its first month on the market, and a similarly early recall of the new Explorer.
Ford has moved the gas tank to the right side of the new four-door Explorer, which went on sale last month.
Two subsequent attempts in newer Explorers also met with failure.
Such changes are possible partly because the new Explorer will no longer share a common frame with the Ranger pickup truck.
Ford decided several years ago that the new Explorers would no longer use 15-inch tires but would have 16-inch tires instead.
The new Explorer may well be the new benchmark in its class.
"He must be one of the new Explorers," another woman said.
A month ago, Ford officials had said that the pressure would be 30 pounds in the front and in the rear for the new Explorer.
The new Explorer will be available with an optional trailer tow package.
