H. l. washingtoniensis (named by Audubon, 1827) is the northern subspecies.

The distinctive northern subspecies has a far more restricted distribution and it is considered Endangered.

The northern subspecies has a brown back heavily streaked with black and cold buff underparts.

Larger than the northern subspecies, it has a paler off-white face and is uncommon within its range.

Since there appear to be at least two recognizable and allopatric size groups in the northern subspecies alone, more research is clearly necessary.

The winter coat is long, though not as long as northern subspecies.

Even if they were indeed hartebeest, they might not belong to the northern subspecies.

The northern subspecies has very few remaining, with seven confirmed individuals left (including those in captivity).

The critically endangered northern subspecies of the white rhino is the focus of the second episode.

But the going has been much tougher for the northern subspecies, which used to be found in several countries in eastern and central Africa.
