Like many other cyprinids, the present genus was long included in Barbus.
Fabricius himself established the present genus under the name Phycis.
Better material recovered later showed that the species belongs into the present genus.
It may well belong into the present genus, but this requires confirmation.
This group seems to be paraphyletic however, and the present genus is apparently not closely related to most or all of them.
However, this is not universally accepted and both are included in the present genus here.
Some species have been removed from the present genus, however.
This has led to the vernacular name skeleton frogs for the present genus.
O. fulvocilialis is sometimes still placed in the present genus.
