It is astonishing, then, to read in Robert J. Richards's review (June 20) that I am on a "quasi-teleological" hunt for the meaning and purpose of life - and that I think economics wins.

To the Editor: I was pleased to read in Michael Gorra's review of "Art, Dialogue, and Outrage" (May 15) that he considers Wole Soyinka's play "Death and the King's Horseman" "powerful" and "Mr. Soyinka's finest."

It's odd to read, in Manohla Dargis's review of "The September Issue" in today's Times, that R. J. Cutler's documentary, about Anna Wintour and other high-level editorial staffers at work on Vogue, is "all about money."

To the Editor: I was sorry to read the gratuitous put-down of the Trees of Mystery in Northern California as a tourist trap in Bruce Barcott's review of "Cross Country," by Robert Sullivan (July 2).

I should be just as happy to take the advice that I read in National Westminster Bank's quarterly review, for instance.

But after reading those words in William Kennedy's review of the two Steinbeck books (April 9), old affection prompts me to offer an explanation for his attitude that may be of interest - and a cautionary tale for book reviewers.
