In 1851, he enlisted in the regular army of the United States, joining the 2nd U.S. Cavalry, a regiment then commanded by Colonel E. V. Sumner.

Later commands he served under included: Captain Job Knapp's company, and Colonel Job Cushing's regiment in the northern army, Captain Edward Seagrave, Colonel Wood, Captain Caleb Whiting, Colonel Benjamin Hawes, Captain Thomas Marshal Baker's company, and Colonel Samuel Denny's regiment.

From its headquarters in Fort Devens, Massachusetts, the regiment commands fifteen training centers in nine states throughout the Northeast.

In August 1990 the regiment commanded and formed the headquarters and one complete squadron for the first-of-its-kind Militia brigade-level exercise.

On 13 January 1779, the regiment consoldated with Patton's Additional Continental Regiment and the three companies of Malcolm's Additional Continental Regiment commanded by Captains John Doyle, John Steele, and James Calderwood.
