Mr. Chiella was a retired machinist and an avid gardener who spent a lot of time outdoors, his wife said.

"But you never can tell," said her husband, Joe, a retired machinist, who was not about to gloat until victory was official.

In 1985 she married her fourth husband, Edward Krusheski, now 77, a retired machinist.

Morris Friedman, a retired machinist who lives in the area, said: "This is a part of my life.
