On February 10, 1940, a severe tornado killed eighteen people and caused wide scale damage.

It was later upgraded to an F5, the most severe tornado possible.

The most severe tornadoes reported were two F4 tornadoes.

The Cathedral was damaged by a severe tornado on the 24 August 1999.

Early that morning, more very severe tornadoes hit the western and northeast parts of Birmingham.
