The nebulous terms "art film" and "independent specialty film" do not represent distinct categories that are tracked by the industry.

In New York, the plan is to devote six or seven auditoriums to specialty films, especially foreign movies that might otherwise have been overlooked.

A limited release is often used to gauge the appeal of specialty films - especially of documentaries, independent films and art films.

The specialty film opened to generally positive reviews and commercial success, grossing US$50 million worldwide, exceeding its £15 million budget.

Klaw also used Page in dozens of short, black-and-white 8mm and 16mm "specialty" films, which catered to specific requests from his clientele.

They also offer unique specialty films and coating services.

"While the academy is mostly in L.A., New York can make or break a specialty film," she said.

"I shoot specialty films," he explains during a break in filming, adding that he has been in the business for 17 years.

Some of the multiplex theaters, especially those in urban areas, have been willing to reserve a screen for what are euphemistically called "specialty films."
