Why are these people supporting Saddam?

They supported Saddam, and then when it no longer suited their interests, they got rid of him, and on spurious grounds.

Those who supported Saddam, like Yasir Arafat, had to literally apologize to their neighbors after the war.

"They weren't supporting Saddam," he said, "they were protesting their own plight."

Two Kurdish factions had been vying for control of the area; after one of them decided to support Saddam, he had attacked the other.

"They cannot stand as if they are supporting Saddam and be the coalition's target," he said.

"We support Saddam and think he is going to win."

These ideas came to a head during the gulf war, when most of the Arab world supported Saddam.
