And maybe a firmware upgrade on your router will make it support WPA.

Despite the wireless chip's minimalism, it supports WPA.
So if you can get later model drivers for the card, and they support WPA, you're in great shape.
It is recommended to use only hardware that supports WPA or WPA2.
Somebody comes over who doesn't support - they may support WPA with a pre-shared key, but not the higher level that you're using.
It doesn't support WPA.
