On 1 July 1945 it began flying airstrikes from Ie Shima, targeting enemy ships, railroad bridges, airfields, factories, and barracks in Japan, Korea, and China.

At first, the choices all seem military: a rapid air strike to destroy the weapons; a larger attack that would also target aircraft, airfields and storage areas; or a full-scale invasion.

Coalition aircraft have flown more than 4,000 sorties against Iraqi forces since Operation Desert Storm began, targeting command-and-control centers, airfields, and Scud short-range ballistic missile launchers.

September 7 - Hermann Göring orders the German Air Force (Luftwaffe) to stop targeting British airfields and to attack the city of London instead.

The attack targeted airfields on Kyūshū as well as ships of the Japanese fleet in the harbors of Kobe and Kure on southern Honshū.
