John Crawford, an artist known for his work in steel, has constructed a big, totemic, cubistic sculpture with four tree trunks cut so cleanly that they seem to have been carved by a razor.

It was a sweet moment for this often reclusive artist of enigmatic graffiti and white totemic sculptures, who had arrived with his wife and son from Rome, his adopted home.

Vases grew into six-foot totemic sculptures, and bedroom sets were made of gray molded fiberglass with neon tubes for lamps.

There is also a 40-foot-high totemic sculpture, covered in ceramic fragments and black granite, by Jamie Suarez, a Puerto Rican artist.
