Cassidy was a university proctor at the Church of England's General Synod from 1999 to 2005 and has been a non-residentiary canon of Durham Cathedral since 2001.
He narrowly escaped being sent down when a university proctor caught him in charge of a Mercedes motor car he had been lent for the day by his friend the young Duke of Grafton.
