Schools Chancellor Ramon Cortines has embraced an endorsement of year-round classes made last week by a citizens' commission he appointed.

Mr. Cortines will start a pilot program of year-round classes this summer in at least two high schools.

In the years since then, TTC has expanded the program to offer year-round classes in dozens of subjects including musical theatre, on-camera acting, and Shakespeare.

Mr. Brekke said his district saved $16 million - the cost of two new schools - by converting to year-round classes in 1976.

One promising approach is Schools Chancellor Rudy Crew's intention to experiment with year-round classes.

These courses are year-round, daily classes that every student must take.

He was responsible for running a year-round class for over 200 participants, including a number of elite-level athletes.

For the many school districts that are considering year-round classes, air-conditioning is no longer optional.

Testifying at a City Council hearing, Dr. Crew said he would prefer not to resort to year-round classes because of its potential to disrupt family schedules.

He said that he would immediately ask for a stay of the decision so that the school, which has classes year-round, could remain open during the appeal process.
